A Castelli Armorial large circular dish
Circa 1670
Painted in the workshop of Francesco Grue or Antonio Lolli in ochre, yellow, manganese, green and light-blue with The Judgement of Paris, Venus, Minerva, Juno and Cupid standing in the centre, one offering the apple to the seated Paris, a dog at his side, further nymphs and Mercury behind in a grassy landscape below threatening clouds within a well of stylised half-flowerheads, the border with the Arms and three portrait-head panels divided by scrolling flowering foliage issuing from crowned grotesque figures (restored chip at 12 o'clock, slight hairline crack at 5 o'clock, very minor chips and glaze flaking to rim)
18in. (46cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The subject is taken from the engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi or Marco Dente after Raphael. It continued to be popular at Castelli over the next 150 years. See Graziella Biscontini Ugolini, Maiolica ed incisione, no. 67 where a later dish of similar size and the engraved source are shown.
