This hitherto lost déjeuner is fully recorded in the Sèvres archives and listed in Marcelle Brunet's unpublished thesis for L'Ecole du Louvre.
Described as "Déjeuner des récoltes agrestes" the painted decoration was carried out by Develly, the gilding by Boullemier and the ornements by Durosey. The significance of the gilt QA on the plateau is not clear.
The cost, which included a box and a third cup and saucer which are no longer with the service, was 2.715fr.
For the painting Develly was paid as follows:
Plateau 570fr.
Théière 130fr.
Pot à sucre 130fr.
Pot à lait 85fr.
Tasses à thé 60fr. each
This represented around 55 of the cost price to the manufacture.
The unsigned and undated ink and wash drawing for the scene on the plateau: "La fin des vendanges, le pressoir" recorded in the G. Haumont Collection, and here reproduced from the photograph in the Archives de Sèvres,'was correctly assumed by Mlle Brunet to be a study for this déjeuner. In her opinion it depicts Les Coteaux de Suresnes, a village not far from Sèvres.
Christie's would like to thank the Archives de Sèvres for their help in identifying this service.
Jean-Charles Develly, painter at Sèvres 1813-1847.
Charles-Christian-Marie Durosey, gilder at Sèvres 1802-1830. Seven other members of his family were also employed at the manufacture.
Antoine-Gabriel Boullemier, jeune, gilder at Sèvres 1803. Among his most important works were the Guéridon des Saisons at Fontainebleau. Five other members of his family were employed at the manufacture.
