Morris was renowned for his exceptional garden at Benton End in Suffolk and particulary for his iris-breeding. In their article in Country Life, 17 May 1970, Christopher Neve and Tony Venison recorded that 'For many years the extensive lower garden at Benton End was entirely of irises ... the garden held about 1,000 of his new iris seedlings every year'.
The present work is one of a number of paintings showing a variety of the irises bred by Morris. A composition entitled, Iris Seedlings is in the collection of the Tate Gallery, London (see R. Morphet, Cedric Morris, Tate Gallery exhibition catalogue, London, 1984, pp. 65-69).
