Lot Essay

The present work is one of a number of paintings of mangosteens resulting from the world tour undertaken by Kelly and his wife in 1936-7, during which they visited Cambodia and China. A smaller painting of the subject, dated May-June 1937 and entitled, Hanoi: Mangosteens, was exhibited widely by the artist: Dublin, Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts, 1938, no. 142; London, Royal Academy, 1944, no. 49; and London, Royal Academy, Sir Gerald Kelly, K.C.V.O, P.P.R.A., 1957, no. 225.
