Lot Essay

Laura Knight began a tour with Carmo's Circus during the 1930s, around the towns in the Midlands. She was soon taken on as their official artist on a weekly salary of two and sixpence. She lodged with the clown, Joe Bert, and his wife, Ally, who became her lifelong friends thereafter, and were the subject of her 1962 circus memoir, A Proper Circus Omie.
