Lot Essay

Dod Procter delighted in painting children and the present work is one of the finest examples of her depictions of a young girl. The work was included in the touring exhibition of Dod and Ernest Procter's work in in 1928-9 which was shown at thirteen locations throughout the country, and which attracted over 60,600 visitors at Birmingham City Art Gallery alone (see C. Fox and F. Greenacre, Painting in Newlyn 1900-1930, Barbican Art Gallery exhibition catalogue, London, 1985, p. 143).
