In the latter part of his life the North East became for Lowry a haven from the pressures of fame. The entrance to the Tyne at South Shields fascinated him: 'I'm particularly fond of watching large ships coming into the harbour, or being brought down a river by tugs. I love the Tyne for that reason. It's a wonderful river'. Lowry painted numerous studies of the bustling port from vantage points such as Customs House Quay (see J. Horseley and N. Sinclair, L.S. Lowry in the North East, Sunderland Museum and Art Gallery exhibition catalogue, 1989, p. 37).
