Hand-coloured engraved allegorical general title, with full-page engraving of the arms of Spain on the verso, memorial to Ortelius, portrait of Ortelius, hand-coloured engraved section-title to Parergon with architectural surround, 156 engraved mapsheets, including 38 in the Parergon, mounted on guards throughout, ALL COLOURED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND, decorated woodcut initials (Repaired tears to 2 maps [82,117], some light finger-soiling, small dampstain affecting some upper corners and margins, corners of front free endpaper and first 6 leaves neatly restored, not affecting text.) Contemporary calf, covers panelled in gilt and blind with central gilt arabesque enclosing blind-tooled title on the upper cover and allegorical figure of Justice on the lower cover, gilt arabesque cornerpieces, spine in 6 compartments, lettered in the second, raised bands (lower corners neatly restored, joints slightly cracked, spine and corners rubbed, gilt rubbed).
AN IMPRESSIVE AND FINELY-BOUND TALL COPY of Ortelius' Theatrum. This, the Latin edition published by Jan Baptist Vrients, is one of the largest editions of Ortelius's influential atlas. Vrients took over the plates and rights from the Plantin-Moretus press in 1601, adding 6 new maps: No.s 143-147; 40-41P. The Nomenclator was printed by Robertus Bruneau. Koeman, Ort 36.
