WALTON, Robert (fl. 1647-87). A New, Plaine, & Exact Mapp of Africa described by N:J:Vischer and done into English, enlarged and corrested according to J:Blaeu. London: sold by Robert Walton at the Globe and Compass in St Paules Churchyard between the two north doores, [1659].

Engraved map of Africa, 450 x 550mm. Decorative cartouche of a native riding a crocodile, borders with 8 native figures and 10 inset town views.

A rare map of Africa, not in Norwich or Tooley. The map is modelled on geography of the Visscher map of 1656, and Walton in his title says he has used the geography of Visscher and Blaeu. Although the map is clearly also related to John Speed's and Hondius's depiction of the continent. The dating of the map is slightly disputed, the Brtitish Library example being assigned a date of 1673. Curiously John Overton in 1666 issued an similar map also acknowledging Visscher and Blaeu.
