The Leica MP was introduced in 1956. MP1 to MP12 were presentation models and were finished in chrome, MP13-MP150 were finished in black and MP151 onwards were chrome. The highest recorded serial number is MP402.

Leica MP cameras with the following serial numbers have been offered at auction by Christie's in recent years: 4, 7, 9, 19, 166, 293, 372 and 398.
