Lot Essay

John Dalby came from a Yorkshire family of painters and his work is sometimes confused with that of David Dalby (1794-1836), to whom he was related. The first official record of John Dalby was in 1838, when he was living with Thomas Dalby at 38 Stonegate, York and practising as a painter. John specialised in hunting scenes which were admired for their liveliness, detail and precision.
