Bedlamite, a chestnut colt by Welbeck out of Maniac by Shuttle, was foaled in 1823. Maniac was the dam of Lunatic, who was the dam of Bessy Bedlam. Owned by Lord Kennedy, Bedlamite ran three times as a two year old in 1825, winning all three races at Middleham, York, and Doncaster. As a three year old in 1826 he won four races including the Gold Cups at Richmond and at Northallerton, and was third behind Tarrare in the St. Leger. In 1827 he won at York and was beaten in another race by Mulatto before retiring to stud. He died in 1839.
