Lot Essay

J.F. Walker lived in Hull from 1867 to 1887 and this picture is one of four works painted at Burton Constable and included in the 1949 Ferens Art Gallery, Exhibition of Sporting Pictures.

Major Guy Paget in his forward to the catalogue wrote 'It is extraordinary that so good an artist should be so little known; and if this exhibition has done nothing else, it has discovered an important Yorkshire member of the sporting picture field'.
