Lot Essay

Mary Cameron (Mrs Alexis Miller) was born in Edinburgh and studied in Edinburgh and Paris. She painted many Spanish scenes, particularly bull fights, and lived for a period in Madrid and Seville. She exhibited fifty-six works at the Royal Scottish Academy between 1886 and 1919.
It has been suggested that the present work can be dated to the late 1890s from the length of the stirrup leathers adopted by all five jockeys and that the field in the present work is fictional.

Although there was racing on Molesey Hurst dating back to the 17th Century, in the 19th Century the meeting was known as Hampton races. By 1887 the racecourse was declared unfit for use and was shut. It was subsequently bought and new stands were constructed. It was reopened in 1890 for steeple chasing and in 1891 for flat racing. The racecourse finally closed in 1962.
