Sterope was a bay colt foaled in 1945 by the Derby winner Mid-Day Sun out of York Gala by His Grace. Charlie Elliott won the Cambridgeshire for the second time on the horse carrying 9 st. 4lbs in 1949, his final race.
In her Dictionary of British Equestrian Artists, Sally Mitchell records that three works by Anscomb are in the collection of the Jockey Club. Two further paintings, Honeylight and Pinza appeared on the front covers of the British Racehorse, Spring 1957 and March 1954 respectively.
