Lot Essay

This portrait is after Sir Peter Lely's celebrated full-length of the King, circa 1675, of which the prime version is in the collection of The Duke of Grafton, at Euston Hall. The type was most probably Lely's last official image of the King. It was not, however, a state portrait in the official sense, because the King is seen in Garter rather than in State robes (for the prime original see O. Millar, Sir Peter Lely, catalogue to the exhibition at The National Portrait Gallery Exhibition Rooms, 15 Carlton House Terrace, London, 1978-9, no. 52, illustrated).
