Lot Essay

John Philip Kemble (1757-1823) was a famous English tragedian. His first appearance in London in 1783 was as Hamlet and he was to repeat that role in 1803 when he became actor and manager of Covent Garden. There is a memorial to Kemble in St. Andrew's Chapel in Westminster Abbey.
