Lot Essay

In referring to this painting The Sporting Magazine of March 1828 records: 'This print engraved from a painting by the younger Marshall which certainly does him great credit, as indeed it would to any artist of much older standing. The arrangement of the whole is in good keeping and the leading figure is very characteristic. We understand he was selected by the young artist, for the notoriety of his character, to give effect to the same.'

Lambert Marshall, the son of Benjamin Marshall, had his first work published in The Sporting Magazine when only sixteen and subsequently had twenty-five other pictures published by the magazine.
