Lot Essay

The imposing mirror-backed sideboard, designed in the French/Renaissance manner, corresponds to one exhibited by Messrs Johnstone and Jeanes at the London 1862 Exhibition. The Art Journal's illustrated Catalogue of the Exhibition described the firm as 'one of the oldest in London, having been established in New Bond Street for upwards of a century; its renown has been obtained not only by a good and substanial manufacture, but by continual study to introduce Art into all their works' (p. 207).
