The winged creatures each shown supporting raised circular platforms, their chests carved in high relief with heraldic shields, one with a dragon, the other with an armorial flanked by two figures with crown above, each carved to the sides with rams heads, the front monopodiae terminating in animal masks, mounted on oval section bases and raised on rectangular plinths

Lot Essay

The griffins commemorate the alliance of the Visconti and Gandini families and bear their arms. Visconti, of Milan, one of the more illustrious families of Northern Italy; Dukes of Milan, Dukes of Mondrone, Marquesses de Vimodrone, Counts di Lonate Pozzolo. Patricians of Milan, and in pretence those of Arconti of Milan; Marquesses Arconti & Gandini, of Treviso.
