Lot Essay

Isidore Bonheur (d.1901) gained great success with his equestrian sculptures. The English were particularly appreciative of his fine and wide range of equestrian works and consequently the sculptor began to exhibit at the Royal Academy from the 1870s.

The present model of a trotting horse and jockey demonstrates Bonheur's undoubted ability at capturing perfectly the movement and pose of his equine subjects. Edited by Hippolyte Peyrol, an uncle of Bonheur's by marriage, the detailing of the present cast is exceptionally fine, suggesting a close understanding between founder and sculptor.
