A large and impressive French gilt-bronze striking portico clock with moonphase, third quarter 19th century
The case with stepped top with anthemion cast border and gallery of dentil mouldings intersected by rosettes, with further stiff leaf gallery below, supported on four Corinthian columns above a base with anthemion and stiff leaf cast border and raised on block feet, with acanthus cast bezel to the silvered dial with Roman chapter ring, the engine-turned centre with aperture for painted rolling moon and oval reserve signed CH. OUDIN PALAIS ROYAL NO 32, with small date aperture below, with gilt hour and minute hands and blued steel seconds hand, the twin barrel movement with pinwheel escapement and countwheel strike on bell (lacking), stamped 716 below a star on the backplate, with knife-edge suspension for the high quality gridiron pendulum with silvered Réaumur temperature compensation gauge to the bob with blued steel pointer, the pendulum swinging against a calibrated scale on the plinth; case polished and re-gilt -- 31¼in. (79.5cm.) high
