A four-coloured gold diamond-set snuff box
Unmarked, probably Hanau, circa 1830
Oblong, the hinged cover inset with an oval miniature of King Wilhelm I of Württemberg, in uniform, wearing the sash of the Order of the Crown of Württemberg, the matt reserve applied with enamelled flowers and foliage, the border set with thirty-four collet-shaped diamonds, the base decorated in four-coloured gold with a vase flanked by two stylised birds, the sides and base further decorated with flowers and foliage

Wilhelm I, King of Württemberg (1781-1864), son of Frederick I and Augusta of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, spent his early years in Russia where his father had entered the Russian military service. Wilhelm married three times: firstly in 1808 to Charlotte of Bavaria; secondly in 1816 to Catharina Paulovna, Grand Duchess of Russia; and lastly in 1820 to Pauline of Würtemberg
