Lot Essay

The problem of domination and oppression worldwide is a topic that Alfredo Jaar questions in his works. In 1988, he turned his attention towards the refugees and immigrants all over the world. In one series, he focused on Mexican aliens crossing the Rio Grande frontier between Mexico and the United States, where 'Coyotes' (smugglers) help immigrants cross the river into the United States.

Coyote! is a light box with the photograph of a woman and a child on her back forging the river. The image is partially reflected in a framed mirror on the wall. The frame can be interpreted as ideologies and preconceived ideas that narrow our understanding. Frontiers were built to create an order that helped human beings to have a better existence; paradoxically sometimes trying to keep this preconceived order, repression and cruelty occurs.
