Bahía de Matanzas

In the second half of the 19th century, landscapes were the favorite genre for Cuban artists. Esteban Chartrand was considered one of the most outstanding Cuban artists in this field. His pictorial conception was similar to the romantic landscape painters of his time. He painted directly from nature but didn't translate the precise vision of reality that surrounded him. Instead he translated nature through his poetic eye which allowed him the license necessary to achieve his objectives. In Bahía de Matanzas, theory and anecdote are lost in the extensive expanse of water that projects into infinity. Here Chartrand accentuates the distances with light, which at certain points appear, and repeat like an echo, each time a little bit further away.
