Lot Essay

These vases are designed after a Roman bronze original in the Vatican Collection, Rome. The Hildescheim treasure, excavated near Osnabruch, Germany also contained a comparable vase. The treasure, which is thought to have belonged to a Roman legion serving the Consul Varus, governor of Germany from circa A.D. 7, is now in the collection of the Berlin Museum.
