Lot Essay

A smaller silver-gilt cup and cover with the same maker's mark, sold Christie's, 23 May 1990, lot 221, has similar cast handles and cover chasing. This porringer forms part of a small group of unusually large porringers, the most renown of which is possibly the Dolben porringer, by Robert Smythier, 1678, which weighs some 134ozs, and with a diameter of 10 1/8in. Of similar size is the Winchester Cup, maker's mark TM, 1675, which weighs 104ozs. Both these pieces were exhibited London, 25 Park Lane W. 1., Loan Exhibition of Old English Plate, 1929, pl. 23. A porringer without cover, by Jacob Bodendick, 1680, 19½in. wide and weighing 135ozs., was sold Christie's, 8 December 1994, lot 49.
