Dick Seaman - Mercedes Benz 1937 - The original steering wheel from the Mercedes Benz W25, used by Seaman in testing for the team at Monza; an off-course exclusion abruptly concluded his introduction to the high-powered Grand Prix cars.
This wheel taken from the car in which Seaman crashed and burst into flames, was presented to the driver whilst recuperating in hospital by Alfred Neubauer, the legendary Team Manager. Engraved and inscribed Richard Seaman - Mercedes Benz Grand Prix Model 1934-37 - Autodrom Monza (Italien) 31:3:1937, 16:15hr.
Provenance
The wheel passed from Dick Seaman's mechanic Jock Finlayson to Rob Walker, for whom he also worked in the early post-war years, when Rob himself was an active driver.

Lot Essay

Seaman naturally blamed himself for the accident, but Neubauer was forgiving and Seaman was incorporated into the Mercedes Benz Team for the 1937 and 1938 seasons.
