JIM CLARK
A racing overall suit by Hinchman of Indianapolis believed worn by the driver in the US Grand Prix at Riverside in 1963. Sponsors embroided logo to front and back for Goodyear Tyres and with embroided name 'Jimmy Clark' to right breast above angled zip pocket, and applied ribboned stripes to left-side. Clark was introduced to Hinchman by Dan Gurney and these overalls were commissioned by Goodyear who were arranging a sponsorship deal to include Indianapolis and the other US and Canadian events. It would appear that after the Riverside race, the use of Goodyear tyres was not continued, using Dunlop in the Grands Prix of 1963 and Firestone in the Indianapolis races in which he finished 2nd in 1963 and 1st in 1965. It is also possible that they were subsequently used in the Tasman series.
However 1963 was a highly significant year for it saw Clark clinch his 1st World Championship, and for Lotus, the Constructors Championship.
As with most drivers of this period, so few personal artefacts come to the market, because they would use various helmets and overalls for several seasons. Jim Clark, like Senna had his career cut off in it's prime, and this represents a rare opportunity to acquire a piece of history pertaining to this great driver in his Championship year.
Provenance
The race suit comes with letters from the vendor, correspondence from Goodyears and transcripts of telecons with Mr Hinchman (aged in his eighties) who discussed detail of the buttoned cuffs and magnetic belt, which were features of the suits which he made to individual order for the drivers and sponsors only. He confessed to destroying individual records when a driver had been killed, as in this case, no records survive.
