1959 BMW ISETTA 600
Chassis No: 145152
Yellow and white with original brown interior.
Engine: two cylinder, 582cc; Gearbox: four speed and reverse; Brakes: hydraulic four wheel drum; Suspension: front, independent coil springs, rear, semi-trailing arm coil springs. Left hand drive.
In 1957 BMW launched the 600 as a four-seat alternative to the Isetta 300 when the market for smaller cars began to dip. Its bodyshape was in the same style as the 300 Isetta except for the rear door, added for the rear passengers, and headlights enclosed in the body, but technically the car was quite different. Again, it used a motor cycle engine but with twice the number of cylinders. The suspension set new standards with an advanced rear arrangement called the 'schraglenkerachse' or 'semi-trailing arms', and in fact this engineering was fostered by BMW for many years to come in their later models.
The 600 was specifically directed at the family market, its larger engine capacity and spacious interior making it more adaptable for longer journeys.
The car on offer today is one of 350 surviving 600's and is presented in very good condition, with pale yellow paintwork and a white roof. The power unit is the original rear-mounted twin cylinder, 585cc, four stroke engine driving through a four-speed gearbox. The interior of the car retains its original two-tone brown upholstery that shows ageing but remains in very good condition and includes the inside front door trim panel, which is often missing on this model. The car was previously owned for many years by the Canadian Microcar and Minicar Club representative, and the recorded mileage is under 10,000 miles, which may well be genuine. The brightwork is in good all-round condition and mechanically it is described by the vendor as running and driving well, although the engine and transmission are not known to have been rebuilt.
The car is sold with Canadian title papers.
