1961 MESSERSCHMITT KR 200 "BUBBLE TOP"
Chassis No. 77634
Turquoise with cream interior and snake skin trim.
Engine:Fichtel & Sachs, single cylinder 2-stroke 191cc; Gearbox: four speed and electric reverse; Brakes: cable; Suspension: rubber torsion.
FMR Kabinenroller production continued into the early 1960's although more and more vending machines were appearing between the cars on the assembly lines. This example is one of the final designs and therefore with FMR hubcaps, L-shaped door handles and classic bubble canopy, clearly showing it's aircraft heritage. Indeed, left-over parts from discontinued models , such as the Tg-500 and the Roadster were seen regularly fitted to these final models.
This particular car was brought to Canada, and the collection, from England, which accounts for the British specification wings and torpedo lights. The car was owned for many years by a keen microcar enthusiast and when he parted with it, was professionally restored to the highest order. In fact the engine was literally carried in a suitcase back to England and rebuilt by a Messerschmitt expert. As with many of the cars in the collection, the attention to detail during the restoration was of prime importance; for example, excellent original rust free steel front mudguards were sourced and fitted, rather than repairing the perished originals. The centre portion of the body required professional metal repair whilst the after-market fibre glass tail section was replaced by a damage-free authentic factory steel tail. The underside ribbed steel floorpan was restored to excellent condition whilst the engine and transmission were fully rebuilt. Indeed the engine compartment was professionally detailed as well.
The exterior hardware cosmetics were replaced or refurbished as necessary and are all complete; this includes all of the aluminium mouldings, badge insignia letters, Hella headlamps, mirrors and rear chrome plated luggage rack. The plexiglass dome top was properly re-installed and the machine had a new Sekurit front windshield glass fitted. The interior was professionally retrimmed with cream vinyl and snake skin trim. The turquoise paintwork and cream upholstery are, of course, a correct colour combination.
This bubble top is visually superb and will be difficult to fault. It has a Province of Ontario registration permit.
