GENESIS CHARDONNAY
THE WORLD'S FIRST WINE OF 2000
The internationally-renowned viticulturist Dr Richard Smart conceived the Genesis Wine Project selecting a vineyard location near Bourke in the Australian outback (750km north west of Sydney) as the most suitable site for the production of the first wine of 2000. Planning for the production of this wine began as early as 1997 when the site was first selected and subsequently planted. A crop of naturally ripened Chardonnay grapes was picked by the light of miners' helmets on January 1st 2000 immediately following the stroke of midnight. The grapes and fermenting must were then transferred to the Andrew Harris Winery at Mudgee for crushing and were then fermented in small vats and French oak barrels. The wine represents the tangible expression of the end of one millennium and the beginning of the next.
Frank Newman, winemaker at Andrew Harris Winery has taken every care to produce a fresh and zesty wine - typically Chardonnay and Australian in style.
The First Light Australis Wine Company, responsible for the venture, realises that the first 5 numbered magnums will generate a premium and they have therefore decided to donate the proceeds from their sale to charity. All five magnums will be auctioned by Christie's International Wine Department. Magnums one to three in this London sale, magnum number four in New York on 16th June and magnum number five in Tokyo on 2nd November.
Futher details about this unique project can be found at the Genesis Chardonnay website: www.firstlightwine.com.au
THE CHARITIES:
MAGNUM 1: Sale proceeds to be donated to the Busselton Medical Research Foundation.
The Busselton Medical Research Foundation Inc. was initiated by the late Dr Kevin Cullen, a medical practitioner in the township of Busselton in Western Australia and a pioneer in the development of the Margaret River wine industry. The foundation has contributed substantially towards international medical knowledge about cardiovascular mortality and intervention. To date, more than 160 research papers have originated from this study.
MAGNUM 2: Sale proceeds to be donated to Wine Relief www.comicrelief.org
Wine Relief is a co-operative initiative by the British Wine Trade, begun in 1998, to raise money for Comic Relief and the varied and worthy projects that this charity supports in both the United Kingdom and Africa. Comic Relief itself was founded in 1985 following a special broadcast from a refugee camp in the Sudan. Both Wine Relief and Comic Relief hold varied activities throughout the year and in 1999 raised over 33 million.
MAGNUM 3: Sale proceeds to be donated to The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children
The NSPCC is the United Kingdom's leading charity specialising in child protection and working to stop cruelty to children. It has been protecting children from abuse for over 100 years and is the only children's charity in the country with statutory powers enabling it to act to safeguard children at risk. Christie's has nominated the NSPCC as its "preferred charity" and we are currently working in close partnership on a series of fundraising events to support its vital work.
