Harlow is described by Kenneth Garlick as 'by far his [Sir Thomas Lawrence] most gifted pupil'. (Sir Thomas Lawrence, London, 1989, p. 25). He entered Lawrence's studio in 1802 but only stayed for two years as he was of impetuous character. Harlow painted Mrs. Sarah Siddons, the tragic actress, as Lady Macbeth on a number of occasions, (see K.A. Burnim & A. Wilton, Pictures in the Garrick Club, London, 1997, nos. 742 and 743.). Another version of the present drawing, formerly in Mrs. Siddons Budgen's collection is now at Brodie Castle.
