Lot Essay

This recently re-discovered drawing, not listed in Mrs Surtees' catalogue raisonné of Rossetti's work (1971), is a study for the second version of the artist's Joan of Arc, a watercolour commissioned by his Leeds patron Ellen Heaton on 1864 and now in the Tate Gallery, London (Surtees 162 B.R.I.). A smaller replica of the design was sold at Christie's London on 11 November 1999, lot 18. Also a watercolour, it was commissioned by Louisa, Lady Ashburton, later the same year.
