Lot Essay

In 1883 Leighton was commissioned by Stewart Hodgson to design two friezes on the theme of Music and Dance for his drawing room at 1 South Audley Street, Mayfair. The present drawing is similar to a larger drawing, identified as a study of the frieze entitled Music (see Sotheby's London, 31 January 1990, lot 363, £2,200)
