Lot Essay

Sir James Hamlyn, formerly James Harcourt inherited Cloverly Court, Devon from his Grand-Uncle Zachery Hamilton, taking his name. He married Arabella only daughter and heiress of Thomas Williams of Edwinsford.

This drawing is recorded in the list of outstanding debts remaining at Cosway's death. The entry in the artist's accounts book reads '1789 Mr Hamlym [sic] drawn with Mrs. H. 63 gns.'
