Lot Essay
Walter Langley is regarded as the founder of the artistic community at Newlyn. He grew up in Birmingham, where having been apprenticed as a lithographer, he was elected to the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and was instrumental in the foundation of the Birmingham Art Circle. Following a visit to Newlyn in 1880 he settled there in 1882 and dedicated himself to depicting the fishing community.
The present work shows two women carrying fish creels along the beach at Newlyn with the end of South Pier beyond. It is a study for the right hand side of Breadwinners (private collection, see R. Langley, Walter Langley, Pioneer of the Newlyn Art Colony, Bristol, 1997, p. 23, illustrated), a large oil which Langley exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1896. He also executed a large watercolour of the full composition, Breadwinners (circa 1896, Penlee House, Gallery and Museum, Penzance, see Fig. 1).
We are very grateful to Roger Langley for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
