Lot Essay

Burra began to make regular motoring tours with his sister Anne after 1965. They visited the less populated areas of Britain such as East Anglia and the Fens, the Peak District, the Yorkshire Moors, Northumberland, Scotland, the Lake District, Snowdonia, the Wye Valley, Devon and Cornwall. He did not sketch on these journeys, but instead spent a long time seated in the car taking in the surroundings which he recreated at home (see A. Causey, Edward Burra, Hayward Gallery exhibition catalogue, London, 1985, p. 53).
