Lot Essay

The keep and other fragments of the Castle were probably begun when the Bamburgh was in Scottish hands in the mid 12th century. The Castle was in ruins by 1704, but was restored for use as a charitable institution from 1757 onwards. In the late 19th century it became the home of Lord Armstrong and was subject to further restoration. A set of four views of Bamburgh was sold at Christie's London, 2 April 1996, lot 44 for £58,700.
