Lot Essay

This watercolour and the following lot were executed during the Christmas of 1896 while Sargent was staying with Dr. and Mrs. William Smoult Playfair in Scotland and were given to Mrs. Playfair. Sargent was a close friend of the family and painted portraits of Dr. and Mrs. Playfair the following year.

This work and the following lot will be included in the forthcoming John Singer Sargent catalogue raisonné by Richard Ormond and Elaine Kilmurray, in collaboration with Warren Adelson and Elizabeth Oustinoff.
