Lot Essay

George Chinnery was born in London and entered the Royal Academy Schools. In 1802 he abandoned his wife and sailed to Madras. He remained in India until 1825 when to escape his wife, who had rejoined him, he moved to Macao. The rest of his life was spent in Macao, Hong Kong and Canton. The ban on European women in Canton enabled him to evade his wife when she again attempted to follow him.
