Lot Essay

This drawing was made during Constable's visit to Epsom, during the Summer of 1806 when he stayed with his cousins the Gubbins (see entry for lot 13). A drawing of Epsom Church, inscribed 'Epsom book 1806', that measures exactly the same size as the present drawing is in the Victoria and Albert Museum (no. E 191-1948). An oil study made at Epsom, dating from Constable's second visit to Epsom three years later is in the Tate Gallery (see G. Reynolds, op.cit. no. 09.8, pl. 750).
