Lot Essay

The present watercolour depicts Wyle Cop, one of the streets in the historic town of Shrewsbury. The view is looking down the steep incline towards The English Bridge and Shrewsbury Abbey. Both are just out of view behind the buildings to the left. The Wrekin, a well-known Shropshire landmark is the hill visible in the background. The artist would have been sitting in front of The Lion Hotel (out of view to the right). Stage coaches had to take the Wyle Cop at the gallop to get to the top and take a sharp swing into the yard of The Lion without slowing! The major buildings shown are still there with some 'tudor-style' infilling.
We are grateful to Peter Boyd, Collections Manager of the Shrewsbury Museums Service for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
