A five-case gold lacquer ground inro
decorated in coloured togidashi-e with a party of travellers in a boat pulled by two labourers on the shore; compartments, risers, shoulders and rims gold lacquer -- 4in. (10.2cms) high, with a red lacquer seal on the side of the second case Shiomi Masanari, 19th Century; spherical cloisonne enamel ojime, late 19th Century; large ivory netsuke carved with the young warrior Yoshitsune (1159-89) in a boat atttanded by oni (demons) and monkeys, signed Bairyusai Kokoku, late 19th Century.

These designs of boating expeditions, a favourite subject for inro bearing the seal of the Shiomi Masanari line of craftsmen, originate in the work of the enormously prolific Kyoto illustrator and pronographer Nishikawa Sukenobu (1671-1751).
