A black lacquer ground lacquer rectangular box
and cover, decorated in gold and coloured togidashi-e with a scene from the No play Aridoshi: the poet Ki no Tsurayuki (9th-10th Century) with an unbrella standing in driving rain before the torii (archway) of a Shinto shrine, reciting a poem to pacify the anger of the god Aridoshi Myojin, the interior with maple leaves on a swirling stream in gold and silver hiramaki-e on a nashiji ground, silver chrysanthemum-head ring-handles -- 8.7/8in. (22.5cm) long, late 19th Century, signed Tatsuki Kokosai, (very minor wear to rims).
