This picture is after an oil entitled The Gentle Music of a Bygone Day by J. M. Strudwick. Now in a private collection, the picture was exhibited at the New Gallery in 1890 and sold by Christie's in London on 11 June 1993, lot 130. Little is known of the copyist, Lalli, athough two comparable works on ivorine by the same hand, Dante's Dream at the Time of the Death of Beatrice after D.G. Rossetti, and Why Seek ye the Living among the Dead after J.R. Spencer Stanhope fetched £4,200 and £5,000 respectively when offered at Christie's, London, on 3 June 1994, lots 161 and 162.
