Lot Essay

Paintings by this talented but short lived artist rarely appear on the market. Having trained at the Birmingham School of Design, he spent all his working life in Worcester, painting mainly genre scenes. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1854 and 1867, and died in Italy where he had gone for the sake of his health. Davis is best known as an extremely sensitive draughtsman; following the sale of an album of his drawings at Christie's in 1951, and the album's subsequent dispersal by Colnaghi's, a number of his drawings exist in public and private collections.
