Lot Essay

The present picture, an early work showing the strong influence of Pre-Raphaelitism, appeared in the first exhibition in which Grimshaw showed, alongside other artists. It was one of four pictures lent by Mr Bates, one of Grimshaw's earliest patrons. A comparable still life is illustrated in Alexander Robertson, Atkinson Grimshaw, 1988, pl. 6.
