A South German gilt-metal quarter striking turmenschenuhr
Maker's stamp I H; fourth quarter 16th century
The case on a square moulded base with later block feet and engraved with Arabesque scrolls and ribbon-tied drapery, the detachable side plate with foliate cast and fluted columns flanking the panels engraved with foliage and fruit with ribbon-tied drapery above and centred by the figures of saints John and Simon standing on pedestals, the galleried top housing the two bells and with a ball-and-spire finial, the front dial engraved with Roman chapers I-XII with typical touch pieces and with a narrow outer concentric ring for the quarters engraved I-IIII also with touch pieces, later hands, the reversed dial with the region and maker's stamps above the strike dial calibrated 1-12 with touch pieces and within an engraved laurel wreath, the three chain movement with four iron pillars of square section, the barrels with brass drums and iron toothed wheels, the forward going train now with a later verge escapement with front-swinging pendulum, the central train striking the quarters and with indirect wind through the base to the rear of the clock, the strike train at the back with countwheel strike on the larger bell
