The case with eagle and dolphin handle to the basket top, glazed sides with inset repeat pully, the moulded base lacking block feet, the 6¾in. sq. dial signed Jonathan Lowndes, above XII and Pall Mall, London beneath VI, elaborately pierced blued steel hands, the finely matted centre with calendar ring below XII, winged cherub spandrels, strike/silent lever between chapters IX and X, pinned dial feet, latches to the five ringed pillars (one now pinned) of the movement, with verge escapement, elaborate pull quarter repeat with two hammers on a small bell with hour strike on a larger bell, the repeat operated from either side via an unusual rack-and-pully system on the front plate, rosette-engraved and calibrated countwheel to the back plate engraved with tulips and scrolling foliage and signed Jonathan Lowndes in Pall Mall, London

Lot Essay

Johnathan Lowndes, considered to be a clockmaker of the first quality was born circa 1657 and then married and made a Free Brother of the Clockmakers' Company in 1680; he is thought to have worked until about 1702.
